This is part one of a series of articles with tips for purchasing a shed.
Is your garage so full of “stuff” that you no longer have room to park your car inside? Maybe your attic is full and your ceilings are starting to sag from the weight. Maybe you’re simply running out of space in your house and need more room for storage. Suddenly, you have a light bulb moment and realize that a storage shed would be the perfect solution!
So you’ve decided you need a shed. That’s great… but what now? With all the options on the market today, how do you choose which option is the best for you? Will you build it yourself? Will you go to a big box store and purchase something cheap to install yourself that may or may not come out already damaged? Will you go as cheap as possible and buy a small plastic structure that requires assembly and is only big enough to store a few tools?
In this article, we’ll explore some of the different options to help you make the most educated decision.
Build your own shed
You can certainly choose to build your own shed if you choose, but going this route will require expertise in construction, at least to a certain extent. More often than not, by the time you figure up the cost of all the different components required to build a shed to this standard as well as your time to design and actually build the shed, the final cost will end up being quite a bit more than a high quality prefabricated shed from Watson Buildings & Carports.
Purchase from a big box store
The second option you have is to go to a big box store like Lowe’s or Home Depot and purchase a storage shed kit. Whether you purchase a vinyl/resin shed kit or a wood storage shed kit, you’ll still have to install and assemble the shed yourself. Once again, this method will require expertise in construction, or you’ll have to hire a contractor to come in and install the shed for you. There aren’t many pros to this option as the kits aren’t very customizable and you simply have the options that come with the kit. Additionally, even though the perceived cost up front is cheaper, by the time you figure up the installation, foundation, and kit cost, you’re still overpaying for the quality you get.
